Where did it all begin?

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, was written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and is the prelude to the master piece The Lord of the Rings.

Whilst marking a set of student essay exams, Tolkien wrote on a blank piece of paper: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit". This was the beginning of Tolkien's novel.

The Hobbit was originally published by Allen & Unwin on September 21, 1937 and originally there were only 1500 copies printed. Published in hardback with 10 black-and-white illustrations and two maps drawn by Tolkien himself, The Hobbit received positive reviews and eventually became a best seller. Today it is one of the biggest selling books in the world and has been translated into 40 different languages.
